Papers, 1858-1936 1864.

The Mary Augusta Ibbetson Papers consist primarily of a typed transcript (prepared by her granddaughter Eleanore Ibbetson Wiedmann) of a diary covering the years 1858-1861 and 1863-1865. The volumes reflects her activities as a young girl in Illinois, where she attended Greenwood Academy in Chesterfield, and as a student at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. The diary includes information about her housework; social activities; religious life; studies in algebra, botany, Latin, rhetoric and other subjects; the health of family members and friends; thoughts about young men and marriage, and Civil War news. She also discusses Mount Holyoke faculty members, pariticularly Fidelia Fiske and Catharine Hopkins; school regulations; and events such as lectures by visiting missionaries and Mountain Day in 1864. In addition to the diary, her papers include a 1926 letter expressing regret at her inability to attend a Mount Holyoke reunion and information about her death in 1936.
